Patty the Pony brings comfort, connection and joy to Residents
Pet therapy often has people picturing a friendly dog, but at Carrington, one of the most powerful sources of comfort arrives on four small hooves. Patty the Pony has been visiting since 2025, and in that time, he has become a cherished companion whose presence has a meaningful impact on the wellbeing of Carrington residents.
Emotional comfort through gentle connection
Patty has a natural ability to create calm the moment he enters a room. His soft coat, steady movements and gentle curiosity help residents feel relaxed and at ease. Many describe feeling happier, lighter, and more settled after spending time with him.
Sheona looks forward to his visits every month.
“I love that I get to cuddle and pat him,” she said. “He is such a sweet boy, so gentle and loving.”
These simple moments of touch and connection can ease feelings of loneliness, spark memories, and encourage residents to express themselves. For those who may find it difficult to engage socially, Patty often serves as a bridge, helping them reconnect with others.
Encouraging social interaction and shared moments
Patty’s visits bring people together. Residents come out to greet him, families gather to watch, and staff join in the excitement. The atmosphere becomes warm and lively, and conversations begin more easily. Even residents who are reserved will smile, reach out to pat him, or share a story from their past.
Ursula Merrick Saunders, Patty’s owner and business partner, sees these moments unfold every time.
“I am really affected by the connection Patty has with residents,” she said. “Seeing the bond they share is truly magical.”

A calming presence that builds confidence
Patty’s patient and steady nature makes him ideal for therapeutic visits. Ursula describes him as calm and unbothered by noise or activity around him.
“We had dogs jumping over his back and stock whips cracking around him,” she said. “Nothing fazes him.”
His love of treats also helps him build trust quickly.
“He is an oversized dog,” Ursula said with a laugh. “He will eat anything.”
For many residents, interacting with Patty brings a sense of confidence and joy. The simple act of brushing him, patting him or talking to him can be grounding and emotionally soothing.
Meaningful experiences for residents and visitors alike
For Ursula, the experience is just as rewarding.
“When I leave Carrington, my heart is full and the rest of my day is always good,” she said.
Patty’s journey to becoming a therapy pony began in a very different setting. He was first given to Ursula and her daughter, then attended a child’s birthday party as a unicorn. A friend who worked at Carrington recognised his gentle nature and suggested he might be a good fit for therapy visits.
“If there was ever a pony that could do it, it was Patty,” Ursula said.

A small visitor making a big difference
Today, Patty is far more than a visitor. He is a source of comfort, joy and emotional support. His presence enriches the daily lives of residents and reminds us how powerful small moments of connection can be.
Patty is one of many meaningful experiences our team brings to our community, helping residents feel supported, engaged and truly seen.
