Community & Media Statement on Alleged Incident

22/05/25

Good afternoon,

I’m writing to provide you with a brief update on the NSW Police investigation into a former employee and our ongoing support around this matter. We have been deeply shocked by the allegations and understand the impact they have on a tight-knit community like ours.

We can confirm the alleged offender stopped working with our organisation in November 2024, upon her arrest, and after approximately 12 months of employment. The individual no longer works in the aged care sector.

We had no prior knowledge of the assault related allegations before they were presented to us by police on 23 April 2025. As soon as we became aware, in consultation with Police, we contacted the families involved and have offered ongoing support to them as required since then.

At the relevant time, in relation to the recruitment of the alleged perpetrator, we had carried out reference checks, and Police checks in accordance with the aged care legislation.

As part of our continuous improvement process, following being informed by the Police, we have been undertaking a thorough review to identify any ways we can better safeguard residents and families, including the vetting of staff, and the security of our built environment, and in accordance with best practice standards.

Our primary concern, as always, is the welfare of our residents and their families.

Some of the actions we have taken include the following:

  • To ensure comprehensive support, all relevant residents and their families now have access to counsellors both onsite and via phone if they require. This is in addition to the service available to staff. We are also exploring ways to make these resources a permanent feature of our care offering.
  • Whilst we have CCTV cameras in common areas, we are reviewing additional CCTV.
  • Conducting police background checks every 24 months instead of the standard 36-month interval.
  • In relation to the vetting of staff, we are implementing advanced vetting technologies capable of running reference, fraud, and police checks simultaneously.
  • We are also investigating a new “buddy” system to provide staff with greater peer support and to encourage faster reporting of any potential concerns or changes in employee behaviour.

We remain committed to the highest standards of care and safety for our residents and staff, and will continue to prioritise transparency and accountability throughout this process.

This is a difficult time for our much-loved community, which is deeply supportive of our long-standing not-for-profit organisation. We will stay strong and work through this together.

We remain committed to upholding the dignity and respect of every individual in our care and across our community.

We were notified yesterday by NSW Police about serious allegations regarding a former employee.

We are deeply shocked by the allegations. They relate to seven residents at our Mary Mackillop and Grasmere Terrace aged care facilities.

We had no prior knowledge of the allegations presented to us yesterday by police.

We can confirm the alleged offender stopped working with our organisation in November last year after approximately 12 months of employment. The individual no longer works in the aged care sector.

Our primary concern is the welfare of our residents and their families. We have contacted the families involved and we are providing counselling and ongoing support.

This is a difficult time for our much-loved community, which is deeply supportive of our long-standing not-for-profit organisation. We understand how this matter will impact the community and want to assure everyone that we will stay strong and work through this together.

We remain committed to upholding the dignity and respect of every individual in our care and across our community.

We have notified the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission and we are fully cooperating with the police on their investigation. In addition, we are conducting a thorough internal review.

While there is significant interest in this matter, we will always respect the privacy of our residents, their families and employees and the legal process.
