In our endeavour to continuously provide quality care, we recently arranged staff education that assisted us to understand how the residents daily care is done. In this instance we wanted to ensure staff are well educated in the processes of feeding residents – including the anatomy and physiology of feeding and how we can modify diets for the benefit of those with swallowing disorders.
This education recently took place in our Mary Mackillop facility.
We engaged speech therapist Christa Taylor to come in to the facility to educate our staff. The educational session included a theoretical component, and a practical component- whereby staff had to feed each other and also taste the modified diets and thickened fluids, so they understood just what the residents had to eat and drink.
It was a great session, and an extremely interactive education experience. We would like to thank Christa Taylor for her time and willingness to come and provide continuing education to our staff around this topic.
